Question 1

Before filming we visited http://www.bbc.co.uk/filmnetwork/filmmaking/guide/introduction/what-makes-a-good-short to find out the key parts of making a short film. We followed these rules;
Film is about telling stories in pictures, which is the most economical way of telling a story.
For our film we created a short film that uses more visuals than speech to create a story that is exciting and will entice the audience throughout by using framing and streets that point at the character you are supposed to be following.
Good Acting- which while filming we made sure we did a few drafts and edits to make sure we could act in the best possible way to make sure we create a good piece of filming.

part 2 short film poster and magazine article

For our magazine we picked a Empire style magazine however we followed the conventions of our art house poster keeping the colours black and white. However we added the red to attract the readers of the magazine. We have created a magazine that features every week a special feature on short films. In this weeks issue we have titled the work Lost Control which straight away links to the title of the film (the film being called Lost Control) also the use of using short film a lot throughout the work shows that the article is focusing on short films which will attract our target audience. We wrote this article for a mature audience that will understand the metaphorical usage in our article. We used example interviews and behind the scenes of the film trying to create a positive theme with the audience that will attract them to read on also to persuade them to watch the film. When i wrote the article i followed a formal rule and tried to persuade the audience to read on and watch the film, I did want to advertise the film but however i did not give away the full details of the film so they do not know the key points of the film but are interested in watching it. I used a section of film too link it with the short film and film this is very aesthetically pleasing to the viewer. Also we used pictures of the main character to show who is in the film and also links to the posters, so if you see the posters you know straight away the article is about them or vice versa.

poster

The Target audience for these posters are; film watchers and arthouse film watchers. We have made the black poster to seem more stylish and will attract art house cinema fans because of its style. While the yellow poster is more for general cinema fans who will be attract by bright colours and eye grabbing imagery. The Spike Jonze poster for still here is similar to ours because of the positioning of the main focus character is looking up showing the character is annoyed/upset by something. For our title we used the Alien font to show it is sci-fi and will attract the audience who will recognise the genre of sci-fi and who will like the font. This straight away shows the person looking at the poster that the film is sci-fi which is very important to attract our target audience. The tag line who's controlling you? shows that the film is about someone who isn't in control of what they are doing. Also the use of the rhetorical question makes it more personal and seem like the poster is talking directly to the person who is looking at the poster. We didn't choose to do a blurb because we felt that it would make the poster have too much information on it and will make the person who is looking at the poster look less at the main character on the front of the poster. The main image on the poster is the main character of the film we have chosen to make him look confused/upset to show that something is happening to him also it shows what the film is about and who is in the film. For the arthouse poster we used a black and white color scheme to keep the work simple and classy, the alien font will give away that the film is sci-fi. For the one for a generalized audience we picked a eye catching color that will attract the person who is looking at the poster, and it is aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

Changes in our film

Due to changes in the filming process we had to change the storyline in our film; we have changed it so that I am being controlled like a video game by David Atkinson. I walk down an ally and he is pressing buttons on a Playstation remote, I find out where he lives i walk in a destroy the CD he using to control me. The short film starts with a bag full of CD's with peoples names on that David Atkinson can control many people. This fits into the sci-Fi genre so the market research we have done will be the same and will apply to the same target audience. The reasons for this was our original idea would not work with what we had and also due to people working and having no time to film we changed the actors.

our film poster planning development

poster

This poster is completely different to the Full Metal Jacket, this poster is aesthetically pleasing due to the complementing colours of red and yellow that are eye catching. Also they use pictures and styles that relate to the film which adds a humorous effect if you've seen the trailer or the film. The use of No goats, No glory also adds a humorous effect and you can tell straight away that the film is a comedy. Also the having a picture of the stars is a great advertisement for the film because you know straight away who is featuring in the film. Also it gives you an idea of the style of the film.

Similar posters to ours

For the design they have used a simple colour scheme in being black and white. The contrast between the two colours highlight the title and the credits on the poster. The Full Metal Jacket font is a world war two nazi theme. This is so the audience can directly see what genre the film is. The use of the stereotypical vietnam war helmet shows it is about vietnam. The words Born to Kill which would have been written on many marines helmets. The use of the punch line 'In Vietnam the wind doesnt blow it sucks' which is a marine quote that is famous in America.

Planning For Our Film

For our film we have studied short films; starting with a generalization of popular and the most famous short films which includes Spike Jonze work who is a very popular short film creator. Then we studied short films that are the same genre that we are creating (which is sci fi) this included black hole which is a futuristic sci-fi film that focuses on the greed of the human kind.
For the preparation we have asked 16- 18 year old's their opinions of short films and what type of short films they would be prepared to watch. We found out that most would watch a sci-fi thriller film. They would want to be entertained and understand the plot but would be prepared to accept the sci-fi element in the film.
We have taken this information and used it in designing and creating our film. We have a target audience of people who like sci-fi films and people who would watch short film, so we will follow the conventions of the more popular films when we film to make sure our finish product is the most professional piece of work we could create.
